KYEDI Four Core Competencies Framework v1.0

Author R&D TeamPosted 2022.07.11

Hello from the Korean Youth Educational Development Institute (KYEDI).

Over the past year and eight months, the KYEDI R&D team has been researching the inner competencies that make self-understanding and self-directed growth possible for young people.

Where youth education has tended to concentrate on external achievement — employment and job skills — KYEDI focuses on the inner competencies that let young people understand their own thinking and behaviour, identify problems, and take the lead in designing their lives. The faster the era changes, the more these matter.

Drawing together our research and field cases, we are establishing and publishing the KYEDI Four Core Competencies Framework (v1.0), which will serve as the basic frame for our youth education programs and R&D.

The framework's central aim is to help young people go beyond adapting to problems handed to them — to think for themselves, set their own direction, find the problems, and judge on the basis of human values.

The four core competencies

  • Metacognition — “How am I thinking?” (observing one's thought process and correcting for bias)
  • Self-design — “What kind of life will I build?” (strengths-based career agency)
  • Problem definition — “The ability to form questions rather than answers” (drawing out the essential problem)
  • Human-centred thinking — “What AI cannot do” (empathy, ethics, multi-perspective decision-making)

We see these four not as independent capacities but as a single interconnected system that shapes a young person's continued growth and self-direction.

Version 1.0 is not the final conclusion of KYEDI's research. It is the first version of a competency model that we will keep refining through further research and field application.

KYEDI will continue to apply research findings in real educational settings and feed the resulting experience and data back into research, developing methods and programs that genuinely help young people grow.
